An estimated 100.000 street children live in the Merkato, the commercial center of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I met Bruke, a boy of 15, who like other street children who had been orphaned by AIDS, escaping rural poverty or human trafficking, he sought refuge there; his home a drainage hole in the road. The children face a daily struggle of finding food and protection. With no social welfare system or enforceable child rights in Ethiopia, they are, in essence, in a state of civil death. Over 2 days with Bruke I learnt of his experiences, showing immense resilience to his challenges, despite having been on the streets from age 10. Not hardened by life, I saw him display a compassionate heart, reaching out to newly arrived boys, bringing them into his community. He truly inspired me..
